The scale of loss and destruction from the bushfires is hard to comprehend. So many lives and livelihoods, half a billion animals, probably a billion trees and even more smaller plants and habitats. Everyone seems to know someone who is badly affected. One team member of ours has lost a house in Batlow, another’s property has been burnt out down south. The loss to individuals and our nation is huge. It’s hard to know what to do, but we must do something. We were told years ago that we would have more extreme weather events due to climate change. Increased evaporation, more days of high temperature and lack of rain is all part of this. The intensity of these fires is not normal. It’s not normal for ancient rainforests to be burning like they have in Dorigo and other parts of northern NSW. Governments and their representatives have been negligent in taking action and we are tired of hearing economic excuses, misinformation and denial. The lack of action and leadership is appalling and has never been more evident. We are all affected by climate change and its impact on our environment and it looks like we will be increasingly affected in years to come. It’s time to reflect on what we can do as a business and as individuals to reduce our footprint, to contribute to rebuilding community and the environment around us. How can we push for change and fight for what we believe in? Let it begin with us. We will be marching this Friday at 5.30pm at the Sydney Town Hall. Come and show strength, unity and support for the change we need. And of course, we have donated to a number of organisations that are directly supporting communities and wildlife. Finally, our team would like to thank our firefighters, emergency workers and volunteers who are all doing an incredible job.
