Pot Care & Maintenance Guide

Look after your garden pots with this guide on the care and maintenance of each collection.

AIR

The Air collection pots have a resilient automotive paint finish applied to them and cleaning from time to time will help restore their finish. Clean them as you would clean a car – with water, a little mild detergent, and a soft, clean cloth. Avoid using any aggressive chemicals or abrasive or mechanical cleaning agents, such as bleach, high-pressure cleaners, or hard brushes, which might affect or damage the finish. Applying an automotive wax to the surface will prolong the finish, however like a car the colour may gradually become less vibrant over time when exposed to sunlight. Ensure that your pots are very clean before applying an automotive wax as this may scratch the surface.

CERAMIC OR PLASTIC INDOOR POTS

To clean, use mild, soapy water and soft cloth. Avoid using any aggressive chemicals or abrasive or mechanical cleaning agents, such as bleach, high-pressure cleaners, or hard brushes, which might affect or damage the finish.

DURALITE / LAVA

Clean Duralite or Lava pots as you would clean a car – with water, a little mild detergent, and a soft, clean cloth. Avoid using any aggressive chemicals or abrasive or mechanical cleaning agents, such as bleach, high-pressure cleaners, or hard brushes, which might affect or damage the finish.

HANDTHROWN TERRACOTTA

Our handmade terracotta pots will fade and change colour naturally. This is part of their weathering and aging process, and it’s to be welcomed. Terracotta pots will become paler in the sunlight, and sometimes they grow moss if positioned in shady, damp situations. If you wish to refresh your handmade terracotta, gently rub with an extra fine sandpaper to remove the top layer of terracotta, or gently use a scrubbing brush with soapy water to remove algae. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals.

TERRACOTTA

These machine-made Italian pots have been sealed in the factory with a silicone sealer to protect their surfaces. To clean, use mild, soapy water and a soft hand brush or cloth.

TURKISH

To clean pots from our Turkish collection, use mild, soapy water and a soft hand brush or cloth. Be careful not to brush off the layers of old paint. Sometimes a dry, soft, hand brush works well in removing dust. Or simply rinse down with clean water. These pots can be re-limed with a mixture of white lime and acrylic paint, and then re-aged by rubbing back in areas with fine sandpaper to age them. Contact us for more details on this method.

WOODFIRED

To clean Woodfired pots, use mild, soapy water and a soft hand brush or cloth. Avoid any harsh abrasive cleaners or materials. If salt efflorescence appears on the outside of the pot, this is due to moisture coming through the pot, and this can be removed with a dry soft brush. If these planters are being turned into water features, it’s imperative that a pond sealer is used internally.
